Cost:
$100 NZD per participant, or families can pay a $25 deposit and fundraise the participation fee by creating a fundraising page through our online partner, StayClassy. Details are included in the registration process if you’d like to take that route. You simply pay $25 when you register, and you need to raise the equivalent of the camp fee ($100 NZD/$80 USD) on your fundraising account before August 10th. Donations can be made to your account online using a credit card.

Fee includes lift ticket, lunch for participants (for adults, lunch is an extra fee), snacks throughout the day, instruction and supervision throughout the day, a T-shirt and the chance to ski and snowboard with other kids who are also living with type 1 diabetes! Siblings (type 3s!) are welcome to participate, but are subject to the same $100 fee as a child with type 1 diabetes. Age restrictions are 7-17.

Ski/snowboard rentals are free, if needed. However, clothing rentals (ski pants, snow jacket) are an extra fee.

Details:
This will be our third annual camp at Snow Planet! The day starts at 8:15 am with registration and time for families to get their rentals (if needed). Diabetes nurses will be in attendance the day of to answer any diabetes related questions, and on-snow coaches will be in attendance to ski/snowboard with the groups throughout the day. We have a quick orientation at 8:45 and by 9am, we hit the slopes in groups divided by ability level, and oftentimes by age too. Throughout the entire day, Riding On Insulin volunteers and medical volunteers assist the kids in managing diabetes while providing tips and instruction on skiing and snowboarding. Parents are welcome to watch from the giant windows looking onto the ski hill from the restaurant, and at 10am, a parent networking session will be held so parents can meet one another and exchange stories, tips, etc. while the kids have fun on the hill. 11:45am is lunch (included for all participants, an optional extra fee for adults and other non-participating kids) and then more skiing/snowboarding in the afternoon. At 3:30, the groups head inside and return rentals. By 4:15, we head into the conference room for a presentation from Pro Snowboarder and type 1 diabetic Sean Busby.

If you’d be interested in dropping your child off at Snow Planet for the day, this is a possibility but must be strictly communicated to the Riding On Insulin staff before the event. Typically, families accompany the kids during the day—seeing them at mealtime and during breaks. It’s a great time to meet other parents as wel.

continues to advocate, educate, and push the envelope in her son’s name. Michelle is the founder and executive producer of the documentary The Science of Inspiration: Diabetes and Athletes – otherwise known as “Triabetes” — about 12 athletes with diabetes completing an Ironman triathlon. Her diabetes credits include working as a moderator on the JDRF Online Diabetes Support Team, as an executive director for two diabetes organizations, as the executive director of the org that created Riding on Insulin with Sean Busby, and she participates each year in the JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes. She is known for “shaking things up” in the world of advocacy and hopes to talk about some tough topics in “That’s My Point.” as a columnist for dLife, the number 1 diabetes-advocacy website. She likes to spend time doing marathons, triathlons and mostly road biking. Her latest achievement is participating in Hope on 2 Wheels—a 250 mile road biking ride on the east coast for diabetes awareness. In her spare time she also works with other families across the world who have lost their children to type 1 diabetes. Michelle resides in Madison, Wisconsin with her children Samantha and Joey. She is currently the marketing and events director for Brava Magazine.

Before meeting, falling in love with and marrying Sean Busby, Mollie Busby (then, Mollie Shambeau) had little to no previous experience with type 1 diabetes.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Journalism and Retail, she was working as the Style/Associate editor for BRAVA Magazine in Madison, Wisconsin for nearly three years out of college. A series of life-changing events brought Mollie and Sean together in February 2010, and after five months (and a crash course in T1D), Mollie moved out to Utah to be closer to Sean. The pair was married in September, 2011, and together runs Riding On Insulin.

As the Executive Director of the organization, Mollie is behind all aspects of planning, PR, financing, website, newsletters—you name it! She also works as a public relations liaison between Sean and his multiple expedition sponsors for his business, Powder Lines, in addition to accompanying him on many expeditions around the world. When not immersing herself in all things diabetes and snowboarding, Mollie documents the pair’s life in her corner of the internet, The Mollie Shambeau Show (http://themollieshambeaushow.com). The blog serves as a central hub of documentation for the pair’s picturesque adventures, inspiring moments and humorous happenings.
